About the Artist

Hi, my name is Stephanie Taylor. I am a self taught artist currently working in West Auckland. After moving here from the UK in 1995, I developed an interest in the arts, studying art and photography at school and then travelling back to the UK to do a national diploma in performing arts and English literature.

I returned to New Zealand in 2001, and worked for Palmers garden centre for the next few years. In 2005, I went back to the UK with my daughter to visit my mum, and with her encouragement… I started to paint again! So, there I am, paintbrush in one hand, nappy in the other, mum moaning about her kitchen table, baby chewing on canvas, and the delightful feeling of gratification finally running through me! I wasn’t that good to be honest, but I managed a few markets in the UK, and then, missing New Zealand, it was time to think about coming back.

The start of 2006 brought us back into New Zealand. I can hear the waves crash on the beach again at night, I can watch the Tuis pollinate the flax in my dads front garden, I can walk barefoot on the beach without the fear of treading on a broken bottle! Inspiration is everywhere, and although you probably hear many artists say that the NZ landscape is inspiration in itself, when you just get back from the UK, that statement cannot make more sense! 2006 was all an experimenting period. I was trying to put new ideas into perspective with unusual materials and mixed medias, and lets be honest, most of them didn’t work!

In early 2007, as though a light bulb hovering over my head had turned itself on, the idea of using natural materials came to me. I researched suppliers for materials of shells, sands and stone, and that was that! I designed and produced my first collection of ‘Creative Nature’ works, which went successfully on display and sale at Huia Infusion Art Exhibition that year. Since then, I have continued to display my work at various exhibitions, markets, school galas and community events, with plans to advance into well known galleries later this year.

With every day I'm still learning new techniques. I don’t think any artist can be truly satisfied with the skills they’ve already acquired. For me, it is something I enjoy.

A lovely Nikau...
